Class 122(1) The joints in a segmental piston-ring or between a piston-ring and an expansion insert comprise inter-engaging projections on the opposed parts. In an expansion joint the insert may be of T-section, Fig. 3, and have a tongue 10' with a projection 19 on each end of the base 10 which fit steps cut out of the ends 13 of the ring, the rib 9 of the insert entering a slot between projections 8 on each end 13 of the, ring. The insert may'be of U-section, Fig. 7, having a pair of projections 20 at each end, or of L. section, Fig. 11, and the projections 19, 20, 23 may be formed by undulations or triangular teeth; the flange 10 of the L-section may be disposed at the outer periphery of the web 21. The ribs 9, 15, 21 in these constructions are completed by an inclined or stepped portion at their ends, as at 9<SP>11</SP> in Fig. 17. The joint may be formed as in Fig. 37 or Fig. 39, or the surfaces radiused as in Figs. 18 and 22 which show the constructions of Figs. 3 and 7. As applied to a segment ring, Fig. 25, each segment may have identical joint projections on its two ends, resulting in two kinds of segments 25, 26 in the same ring. Alternatively, the joint formation at one end of a segment may be identical with that which engages the other end of the segment, resulting in a ring formed from identical segments.
