653,849. Piston packing. BUTT, G. W. March 18. 1948, No. 8080. [Class 122(i)] A piston having a ring groove therein, the surfaces of the side walls of the groove adjacent the ring being formed each with an annular groove the corresponding faces of the piston ring being formed with an annular groove registering with the first mentioned groove, comprises a main portion 14, a junk ring 16 and an intermediate portion 15 defining between them ring grooves, each side face of which is formed with an annular groove 11. containing rings 10 each side face of which is formed with an annular groove 11. Dowel pins are provided to prevent relative rotation of the various members. The rings and grooves may be stepped to limit radial expansion of the ring. The width A of the ring may be made 2.25 times the depth B.
