Abstract

A composition suitable for lubricating heavily-loaded bearing surfaces comprises a lubricating oil and minor proportions of both an oil-soluble halogen-free organic phosphate or phosphite and an oil-soluble dialkyl disulphide. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil, while suitable phosphates or phosphites are tributyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, trixylenyl phosphate and monocresyl dibutyl phosphite. The disulphide may be dihexyl, dioctyl or octyhexyl disulphide. The lubricating composition is particularly suitable as a turbine oil. In an example, a lubricating oil contains tributyl phosphate and dihexyl disulphide. The Provisional Specification refers to the addition to a lubricating oil of an organic phosphate or phosphite and an organic sulphide, disulphide or polysulphide.
