509,071. Antioxidants for mineral oils. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. April 9, 1938, No. 10935. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1937. [Class 91] Oils for lubricating, insulating or like purposes are improved in stability, especially at high temperatures, by adding trialkyl thiophosphites, in which the alkyl groups contain 4-6 carbon atoms, as oxidation inhibitors and sludge dispersers. Preferably, 0.2-5 per cent by weight of phosphite is added. One or more of the alkyl groups may be halogenated, preferably chlorinated. The alkyl thiophosphite may contain mixed alkyl groups. The lubricating oil is preferably of a paraffinic nature. Phosphites specified are trihexyl-thiophosphite, triamyl-thiophosphite, tributyl-thiophosphite, monoamyl - dibutyl - thiophosphite, diamylmonohexyl - thiophosphite. Thiophosphites which have boiling points above 125‹ C. are found to be most effective.
