Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a lubricating oil or grease and minor proportions of (a) sulphur or an organic sulphur or selenium compound which is normally corrosive to copper at 300 DEG F. and below, and (b) a compound having the general formula <FORM:0811860/III/1> where R1 and R2 are hydrocarbon radicals which may together form part of a ring and X is -S-, -O- or -NH- (see Group IV (b)). Compounds mentioned are 3-piperidinomethyl-, 3 - morpholinomethyl -, 3 - N - phenyl - b -naphthylaminomethyl - and 3 - diethylaminomethyl - 2 - benzothiazolinethiones; 3 - diethylaminomethyl - 2 - benzoxalinethione; and 3 - diethylaminomethyl - 2 - benzimidazolinethione. Sulphur compounds mentioned are dialkyl and diaryl di- and polysulphides and their selenium analogues; esters of acetic acid substituted in the alpha position by di- or polysulphide groups; xanthate esters; xanthogen di- and poly-sulphides of the formula <FORM:0811860/III/2> thiuram polysulphide of formula <FORM:0811860/III/3> and polysulphides derived from thiophosphates, of the formula <FORM:0811860/III/4> where R is a hydrocarbon radical and x is between 2 and 4. Exemplary compounds are di-n-butyl trithiodiacetate; dibenzyl sulphide; di(3 - carbomethoxy - 4 - hydroxyphenyl thioether; and tetrathiobis (dihexyl thionophosphate). From 0.2 to 2 per cent of the sulphur or selenium compound may be used. Lubricating oils mentioned are minerals oils; fatty oils, e.g. castor or rapeseed oil; and synthetic oils such as dicarboxylic acid diesters, e.g. di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate and polyglycol ethers. The greases may comprise mineral oils or synthetic lubricants thickened with metal soaps, e.g. sodium, calcium, barium or lithium soaps. Optional ingredients mentioned are organic halogen or phosphorus compounds; zinc, cadmium or iron dithiocarbamates, e.g. zinc di-n-butyl or diethyl dithiocarbamate; chlorinated paraffin wax, C12+ alkenyl succinic acids; and calcium petroleum sulphonate. According to the Provisional Specification either R1 or R2 (but not both) in the general formula above may be hydrogen. Specifications 377,253, [Group IV], 561,898, 561,941, 714,497 and 767,734 are referred to.ALSO:Compounds having the general formula <FORM:0811860/IV (b)/1> are derived from compounds having the general formula <FORM:0811860/IV (b)/2> by reaction with formaldehyde and a secondary amine. In the formulae R1 and R2 are hydrocarbon radicals which may together form part of a ring structure and X is -S-, -O- or -NH-. Examples mentioned are 3-piperidinomethyl - 2 - benzothiazolinethione; 3 - morpholinomethyl - 2 - benzothiazolinethione; 3 - N - phenyl - b - naphthylaminomethyl - 2-benzothiazolinethione; 3 - diethylaminomethyl - 2 - benzothiazolinethione; 3 - diethylaminomethyl - 2 - benzoxazolinethione; and 3 - diethylaminomethyl - 2 - benzimidazolinethione. The compounds are used as lubricating oil additives (see Group III). According to the Provisional Specification, primary amines may be used in the preparation in which case either R1 or R2 (but not both) will be H. An additional example therein is 2-thio-3 - (N1,N1 - dicyclohexyl) aminomethyl benzthiazolone.
