Abstract

785,701. Hydraulic fluids. DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT CO., Inc. Jan. 26, 1954, No. 2332/54. Class 69 (2). Compositions for transmitting power in hydraulic systems comprise (1) a dialkyl aryl phosphate in which the alkyl radicals have from 4 to 4 carbon atoms and the aryl radical has 6 or 7 carbon atoms; and (2) a minor but sufficient proportion of a polyalkyl methacrylate having a molecular weight within the range of 1500 to 14,000 and in which the alkyl group has from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, to increase the viscosity of the composition at elevated temperatures and to increase the viscosity index of the composition. Dialkyl aryl phosphates specified are dibutyl phenyl, diamyl phenyl, dihexyl phenyl, dioctyl phenyl, di-(2-ethylhexyl)phenyl, butyl-(2-ethylhexyl)phenyl, diiso-octyl phenyl, butyl-iso-octyl phenyl and dibutyl cresyl phosphates. The polyalkyl methacrylates are preferably those in which the alkyl groups contain from 4 to 8 carbon atoms. and are usually employed in amounts of from 0.2 to 10 per cent of the compositions. The polyalkyl methacrylates may be used in the form of a solution in light petroleum oil. Specification 785,702 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 740,078.
