Abstract

A lubricating composition contains a phosphate of formula <FORM:0786351/III/1> where R and R1 are phenyl, cresyl or xylyl and R11 is phenyl, cresyl, xylyl or an alkyl radical having 4 to 12 carbon atoms, and a chlorinated diphenyl which is soluble in the ester and contains at least 40 per cent of combined chlorine. The composition is not a grease, is substantially hydrocarbon-free and contains no trialkyl phosphate. Phosphates referred to are triphenyl, tricresyl, trixylyl, cresyl, diphenyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, 6-methyl heptyl and 2-ethyl hexyl diphenyl phosphates. The chlorinated diphenyl may be one containing 40 to 60 per cent combined chlorine, e.g. the tri-, tetra-, penta- and hexa-chlorodiphenyls. Alternatively, a mixture of chlorinated diphenyls may be used. The composition may contain 20-80 per cent of chlorinated diphenyl. A viscosity index improving agent may be added to the composition. Improving agents referred to are polyalkyl methacrylates, e.g. polyoctyl methacrylate; the polymers may have a molecular weight of 2000-14,000. From 0.2-10 per cent of the polyalkyl methacrylate may be used (based on the sum of the phosphate and polymer as being 100 per cent) and may be dissolved in 45 per cent of a light petroleum oil.
