Abstract

A functional fluid having a viscosity between 150 and 1200 S.S.U. at 100 DEG F. and a viscosity index between 0 and +150 comprises 40 to 55 parts of tricresyl phosphate, 45 to 60 parts of chlorinated diphenyl containing 40 to 60 per cent. of combined chlorine and 0.4 to 2 parts of alkylated polystyrene derived from polystyrene of M.W. between 10,000 and 150,000 reacted with 0.2 to 0.8 parts of olefines containing 6 to 15 carbon atoms. The alkylated polystyrene may be added in the form of a solution in a mineral oil fraction, e.g. S.A.E. 10, or as a solution in chlorinated diphenyl, e.g. 1 part alkylated polystyrene in 22.5 to 150 parts of chlorinated diphenyl added to 20 to 137.5 parts of tricresyl phosphate. Preferred alkylated polystyrenes are those with a M.W. of 60,000 to 80,000, alkylated with olefines of 8 to 10 carbon atoms. The fluids may be used as flame resistant hydraulic fluids, damping fluids and lubricating fluids. Grease-like lubricants may be formed by the addition of sodium, barium, lithium, potassium or calcium soaps or agents such as the C16-C18 dialkyl quaternary ammonium salts of montmorillonite.ALSO:A lubricating composition having a viscosity between 150 and 1200 SSU at 100 DEG F. and a viscosity index between 0 and +150, comprises 40 to 55 parts of tricresyl phosphate, 45 to 60 parts of chlorinated diphenyl and 0.4 to 2 parts of alkylated polystyrene. The chlorinated diphenyl contains 40-60 per cent. of combined chlorine and the alkylated polystyrene is derived from polystyrene of M.W. between 10,000 and 150,000 reacted with 0.2 to 0.8 parts of olefines containing 6 to 15 carbon atoms. The alkylated polystyrene may be added in the form of a solution in a mineral oil fraction, e.g. S.A.E. 10 or as a solution in chlorinated diphenyl, e.g. 1 part by weight in 22.5 to 150 parts of chlorinated diphenyl added to 20 to 137.5 parts of tricresyl phosphate. The fluids are flame-resistant. Grease-like lubricants may be formed by the addition of sodium, barium, lithium, potassium or calcium soaps or agents such as the C16-C18 dialkyl quaternary ammonium salts of montmorillonite. Other additives such as anti-foaming agents corrosion inhibitors, anti-rusting agents, detergent additives, extreme pressure additives and organic or inorganic flame-snuffers may be included.
