Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a mixture of an oil-soluble phosphorus-free sulphurized terpene and an oil-soluble alkyl phosphate. The sulphurized terpene may be prepared by reacting sulphur or a phosphorus-free sulphur compound with a terpene such as pinene or dipentene; suitable sulphurized terpenes are described in Specifications 688,293 and 703,631. The alkyl phosphate may be a trialkyl phosphate e.g. tributyl, trihexyl and trioctyl phosphates. The Provisional Specification refers to sulphurized hydrocarbons in general and to the preparation of sulphurized terpenes by reaction with a phosphorus sulphide or with phosphorus and sulphur.
