Abstract

Benzene or a homologue is alkylated so as to introduce two or more alkyl groups having at least two carbon atoms and is reacted with a polyhalogenated saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon having not more than four carbon atoms in the presence of aluminium chloride. The final product is distilled and the recovered starting materials may be used again; the residue obtained is a lubricating oil. In the example, benzene and ethylene are reacted together in the presence of aluminium chloride, then dichlorethylene is added and the mixture refluxed. The product is distilled to separate a lubricating oil. Specifications 428,410 and 555,081 are referred to. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of products obtained by condensing di-chlorethylene with di- and triethylbenzene.
