Abstract

A lubricating composition consisting of at least 90 per cent hydrocarbon lubricating oil contains, as an extreme pressure additive, from about 0.2 per cent to about 10 per cent of a halogenated polyarylated aliphatic compound (other than a halogenated polyphenylated aliphatic compound) having at least a portion of the halogen in an aliphatic group. The halogen, which may be chlorine, bromine, iodine or fluorine, may all be on one or more aliphatic carbon atoms of the E.P. additive molecule or part may be on one or more aryl carbon atoms. The E.P. additive may contain in its molecule one of the following structural groups:- <FORM:0666558/III/1> <FORM:0666558/III/2> <FORM:0666558/III/3> <FORM:0666558/III/4> <FORM:0666558/III/5> or may have the formula <FORM:0666558/III/6> where C is an aliphatic carbon atom and A is an aryl group other than phenyl. Specific examples of aryl groups A are tolyl, xylyl, naphthyl, anthracyl, phenanthryl and xenyl, while a specific E.P. additive mentioned is di (alpha-naphthyl) dichlorethylene. Hydrocarbon lubricating oils which may be employed include natural, synthetic, hydrogenated and voltolized oils. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of halogenated polyphenylated aliphatic compounds as the E.P. additive and specifies tetraphenyl ethylene chloride, triphenyl methyl chloride, beta-phenyl ethyl chloride and benzophenone dichloride. For comparison purposes, hydrocarbon lubricating compositions containing ethylene dichloride, hexyl chloride, or octadecyl bromide are described. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
