Abstract

3.5.31.51 - Tetra - alkyl - 4.41 - dihydroxy di-phenyls, in which at least one of the alkyl radicles on each phenyl ring is a primary or secondary radicle and in which the radicles may be identical or different, may be prepared by oxidation of one or more alkylated phenols having alkyl groups attached to the two carbon atoms adjacent to that linking the phenolic hydroxyl group. A large number of symmetrical and unsymmetrical compounds are listed. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 such compounds are effective in very small proportions as stabilizing agents for organic compounds in general. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Mineral oils, particularly cracked gasoline, are stabilized by the addition of a minor proportion of a 3.5.31.51-tetra-alkyl-4.41-dihydroxy-diphenyl (see Group IV (b)), in which at least one of the alkyl radicles on each phenyl ring is a primary or secondary alkyl radicle. The radicles may be identical or different and in general may have from 1 to 12 carbon atoms. About 0.001 to 0.1 per cent of inhibitor may be used. Examples are given showing the effectiveness of the 3.31.5.51-tetramethyl, the 3.31-dimethyl-5.51-di-tert.-butyl, and the 3.31-di-ethyl-5.51-di-tert.-butyl compounds.
