Abstract

To a lubricating or like oil such as a transformer and switch oil, there is added as oxidation inhibitor an aromatic compound which contains only carbon, hydrogen and sulphur, selenium or tellurium, the sulphur &c., being attached directly to the ring. The aromatic group may be phenyl, naphthyl, anthryl, phenanthryl, and alkylated derivatives of such groups. Examples of suitable compounds are:--alpha and beta thionaphthol, diphenyl disulphide, thiocresol, dimercaptodiphenyl, and naphthyl disulphide. Most usually the oils are of the paraffinic type, although destructively hydrogenated oils and oils prepared by strong hydrogenation at low temperatures are also improved by the addition; the treatment of white oils is however excluded.
