Abstract

An alkylated benzene, which has been reacted with nitric acid or a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids, is employed as an ingredient in a lubricating oil composition (see Group III). The alkyl benzene is one which has been obtained by alkylating benzene with a C8-C30 olefin in the presence of a Friedel Crafts catalyst. In the examples, alkyl benzenes (which are fractions of the products obtained by alkylating benzene with propylene tetramer) are nitrated with nitric acid or a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids.ALSO:A lubricating composition, suitable for use under extreme pressures, comprises a lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an alkylated benzene (obtained by alkylating benzene with a C8-C30 olefin in the presence of a FriedelCrafts catalyst) which has been reacted with nitric acid or with a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acid. The lubricating oil may be a mineral, animal, vegetable or synthetic oil. The composition may also contain other additives such as oiliness agents and water-resisting agents. In the examples, mineral oil compositions are described which contain nitration products of alkyl benzenes (which are fractions of the products obtained by alkylating benzene with propylene tetramer).
