Abstract

A grease composition comprises mineral oil thickened to a grease-consistency with a non-soap thickening agent, and containing 0.1-10 wt. per cent, based on the total composition, of a mixture of saturated fatty acids derived from wool grease. Wool grease fractions which may be used are pale wool grease, wool grease fatty acid, lanolin fatty acid, and wool grease flake stearine, the acids contained in these fractions including hydroxy-substituted fatty acids. Non-soap thickening agents mentioned are carbon black, polyethylene, mixtures of these two, a bentonite clay/didodecyl dimethyl ammonium complex, and other clay/amine complexes. Optional additives which may be present include phenyl a - and b -naphthylamine, trialkyl phenols, bisphenols, and simple and complex amines (e.g. diphenylamine or phenothiazine). During the grease manufacture a dispersing agent may be present, acetone and propylene carbonate being mentioned.
