Abstract

A lubricant comprises a base oil, (mineral or synthetic), thickened by the addition thereto of 10% to 20% by weight of a bentonite-amine complex and having dispersed therein a carbon black. Preferably, the combined complex and carbon black amount to 10,5% to 25% by weight of the total composition, the proportion of carbon black to complex being in the range 1:1 to 1:20, and preferably in the range 1:10 to 1:15. Synthetic base oils mentioned are esters, e.g. C6 to C18 esters of organic mono-or dicarboxylic acids, complex esters derived from di-carboxylic acids, glycols, polyglycols, or mono-hydroxy alcohols, or alkylated benzenes, or mixtures thereof. A polar compound, e.g. acetone or other specified ketones, ethyl alcohol, ethylene glycol methyl ether, propylene carbonate, acetonitnile or phenethiazine, may be added to assist in the dispersion of the solids in the oil. In one example, 84,4% of a mineral oil of viscosity index 80 was mixed with 11,6% of the complex, 2,5% of acetone added, and then 1,5% of acetylene black, (percentages by weight of total mixture).
