Abstract

In a process for preparing a grease comprising a lubricating oil, a thickener and sodium nitrite, the sodium nitrite is added to the grease-forming mixture in the form of an intimate premixture with oleophilic clay, the amount of sodium nitrite in the premixture being at least 100 weight per cent of the weight of the clay. The premixture may also contain 30-50 weight per cent of a lubricating oil (e.g. a mineral oil), and a small proportion of a surfactant (e.g. sorbitan monooleate or a long-chain alkylimidazoline). Suitable oleophilie clays are exemplified, including those typically used as grease thickeners. In an example, the premixture is added to conventional greases in which the thickener is a clay, a lithium soap or a calcium soap.
