Abstract

1309845 Aromatic diamines and triamines BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 15 July 1971 [25 Aug 1970] 40816/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises a diamine of formula and a triamine of formula wherein A is a benzene nucleus substituted in the para position with a C 4 to C 9 tertiary alkyl group and B is A or an α- or #-naphthyl group. The invention also comprises a process for the production of amines of the above formulµ and an amine of the formula comprising thermally rearranging a hydrazine of the formula to give a diamine of the above formula, and when a monoamine or a triamine is required disproportionating the diamine with further hydrazine to give the monoamine and the triamine. An example is given which illustrates the process. The products are useful as antioxidants for lubricating oils. The hydrazines of the above formula may be obtained by oxidizing an amine of formula A-NH-A when A is the same as B, or a mixture of amines of formulµ A-NH-A and A-NH-B when A is not the same as B.
