Abstract

A lubricant particularly for use as a filling for grooves or recesses in one or other of relatively movable bearing surfaces and which is substantially insoluble in mineral oil which has access to the bearing consists of stearic acid in admixture with sufficient castor oil to form a highly viscous liquid or paste. A small amount of graphite may be added. Proportions specified are from 30 to 60 per cent. of stearic acid with from 70 to 40 per cent. of castor oil. A preferred embodiment comprises a mixture of stearic acid 35 per cent., castor oil 63 per cent. and graphite 2 per cent. The stearic acid is first melted, the desired p proportion of castor oil and graphite added, and the mixture passed through a roll mill. The lubricant is not suitable for brass surfaces at a temperature over 70 DEG C.
