Abstract
An unsaturated fatty acid is condensed in the presence of a catalyst with an olefinic C2-20 hydrocarbon. Specified are: acids-oleic and those from linseed oil; hydrocarbons-di-iso butylene and light petroleum fractions rich in olefines; catalysts-chlorides of zinc, iron, aluminium, and boron fluoride as such or as an organic complex. The condensation product is added to bitumens, and the product is readily emulsifiable in aqueous media containing low concentrations of alkali hydroxide.ALSO:Difficulty emulsifiable bitumens are rendered more easily emulsifiable by the addition of 0.1 to 10 per cent of the product obtained by condensing an unsaturated fatty acid, e.g. oleic or those of linseed oil, with an olefinic C2 - 20 hydrocarbon, e.g. diisobutylene or light petroleum fractions, in the presence of a catalyst. The mixture is emulsified in a solution containing 0.05-0.4 per cent of alkali hydroxide.ALSO:A minor proportion of the product obtained by condensing, in the presence of a catalyst, an unsaturated fatty acid with an olefinic C2-20 hydrocarbon is added to bitumen. It is preferred that 0.1 to 10 per cent be added; that the acid has between 12 and 24 C. atoms, e.g. oleic acid or linseed oil fatty acids; that the hydrocarbon has between 4 and 20 C. atoms, e.g. di-isobutylene in light petroleum fractions and that the catalyst be a chloride of zinc, aluminium or iron, or boron fluoride, (alone or as an organic complex).
