Abstract
Extreme pressure additives for lubricating oils, which additives contain combined sulphur, are stabilized so that they no longer evolve hydrogen sulphide on standing by adding to them 0.5-6 per cent by weight of sodium sulphite or sodium hydrosulphite and heating the mixture for 5-60 minutes at 150-250 DEG F. Extreme pressure additives mentioned are sulphurized or phosphosulphurized dipentene, sulphurized and/or phosphosulphurized fatty oils and fatty acids and phosphosulphurized metal-containing alkylated phenol sulphides. Fatty oils mentioned are sperm oil and lard oil. In the examples, (1) P4S3-treated sulphurized sperm oil; (2) P2S5-treated barium p-diisobutyl phenol sulphide; and (3) dipentene sulphurized with elemental sulphur in presence of a mixture of mercaptobenzothiazole and sym. diphenyl guanidine, are stabilized with sodium sulphite or hydrosulphite.ALSO:Extreme pressure additives for lubricating oils, which additives contain combined sulphur, are stabilized so that they no longer evolve hydrogen sulphide on standing by adding to them 0.5-6 per cent. by weight of sodium sulphite or sodium hydrosulphite and heating the mixture for 5-60 minutes at 150-250 DEG F. The sodium sulphite or hydrosulphite may be added in solid form or as an aqueous solution, while the extreme pressure additive may be stabilized while in the form of an oil concentrate. Extreme pressure additives mentioned are sulphurized or phosphosulphurized dipentene, sulphurized and/or phosphosulphurized fatty oils and fatty acids and phosphosulphurized metal-containing alkylated phenol sulphides. Fatty oils mentioned are sperm oil and lard oil. In the examples (1) P4S3-treated sulphurized sperm oil is stabilized with sodium sulphite or hydrosulphite and then blended with mineral oil; (2) a mineral oil solution of barium p-diisobutyl phenol sulphide is treated with P2S5 and then stabilized with sodium sulphite or hydrosulphite, and (3) dipentene, sulphurized with elemental sulphur, is stabilized with sodium sulphite or hydrosulphite.
