Abstract
To manufacture alkene trithiocarbonates, suitable for refractometry, for use in the rubber industry or as fungicides or insecticides, carbon disulphide is reacted with an alkene glycol, an alkene glycol ester, or an alkene oxide, and an alkaline substance or with an alkene glycolate. The reaction may be performed in presence of water or another reaction medium. In examples ethene trithiocarbonate is prepared from: (1) potassium hydroxide or slaked lime, carbon disulphide, ethene dichloride and water; (2) carbon disulphide and ethylene chlorhydrin in the presence of sodium sec. decyl alcoholate, toluene and benzene; (3) aqueous potassium hydroxide, ethylene chlorhydrin and carbon disulphide; (4) potassium hydroxide, ethene oxide, carbon disulphide and water; (5) sodium glycolate and carbon disulphide; (6) potassium thiocyanate, water, ethene oxide and carbon disulphide. Ethene sulphide may be formed intermediately and it is stated that ethene sulphide refluxed with carbon disulphide in presence of alkali yields ethene trithiocarbonate; (7) aqueous potassium hydroxide, glycol monoacetate and carbon disulphide. Propene trithiocarbonate is prepared from carbon disulphide and propene dichloride in presence of aqueous potassium hydroxide.ALSO:Alkine trithiocarbonates are useful, in view of their high sulphur content and because they can still dissolve much elementary sulphur, in the rubber industry.
