Abstract

Light, voluminous silicates, suitable for use as fillers in natural and synthetic rubbers or other elastomers, for loading paper or as catalyst carriers, are prepared by reacting a natural alkali metal aluminium silicate in aqueous suspension with vigorous agitation at elevated temperature and pressure with 0.5-1.3 mols. of an alkaline earth metal hydroxide per mol. of the silica present in the silicate. Specified silicates are soda and potash feldspar, micas, leucites and lepidolite, petalite, pollucite and spodumene; the preferred alkaline earth metal hydroxide is slaked lime. Suitable reaction conditions are temperatures of 150-280 DEG C., pressures of 18-19 atmos. and a water: solids ratio of at least 5 : 1.ALSO:Light voluminous silicates suitable for use as fillers in rubber and rubber-like materials are produced by reacting a natural alkali metal aluminium silicate in aqueous suspension at elevated temperature and pressure with an alkaline earth metal hydroxide (see Group III). When used in natural rubber (e.g. 80 parts of silicate product to 100 parts of rubber), the vulcanized product has increased notch toughness.
