Abstract
Lubricating oil additives are prepared by reacting phosphorus pentasulphide with higher saturated aliphatic carboxylic acids or substitution products thereof, wherein the substituents are aliphatic, aromatic or naphthenic radicles connected either directly to the hydrocarbon chain or through ether, sulphide, selenide or telluride linkages. In examples, phosphorus pentasulphide is reacted with (a) stearic acid, (b) a a 1-dicarboxy-diheptadecyl sulphide and (c) a a 1-dicarboxy-diheptadecyl disulphide, and in the case of (a) bis-(thiostearyl) sulphide is isolated from the reaction product. The odour of the additives may be improved by treating them with an alkali such as sodium hydroxide. a a 1-Dicarboxy-diheptadecyl sulphide is prepared by refluxing a -bromstearic acid with alcoholic caustic soda and sodium sulphide to form the sodium salt of the required acid and then decomposing this with hydrochloric acid. a a 1 - Dicarboxy - diheptadecyl disulphide crystallises out when a -mercaptostearic acid, acetic acid, iodine and sodium acetate are mixed together.
