Abstract

The invention comprises the pentachlorophenyl ester of trichloroacetic acid, and the manufacture thereof by reacting an alkali metal pentachlorophenate with at least an equimolecular proportion of trichloroacetyl chloride. The reaction is advantageously carried out at a temperature between 20 DEG C. and the refluxing temperature of the mixture, preferably at 20-60 DEG C. The product is useful as a soil sterilizer, a plant growth regulator or an intermediate for more complex compounds. In an example, trichloroacetyl chloride is added gradually to a stirred solution of sodium pentachlorophenate in acetone.
