Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0848663/IV(b)/1> (wherein Hal is chlorine or bromine) and their preparation by reacting chloro-or bromo-acetyl-2 : 6-dimethylanilide with an N-chlorinating agent in presence of an acid-binding agent under weakly alkaline to neutral conditions. Suitable N-chlorinating agents are elementary chlorine, calcium hypochlorite or tertiary butyl hypochlorite, and suitable acid-binding agents are a mixture of sodium carbonate and bicarbonate or borax. In examples, (1) chlorine in presence of the carbonate-bicarbonate mixture in aqueous suspension at 2 DEG to 3 DEG C. and (2) tertiary butyl hypochlorite in presence of borax in methanol at -6 DEG C. are used.
