Abstract

Saturated carbon compounds containing fluorine and the same or another halogen, are produced by electrolysing a mixture of hydrogen fluoride, with the addition of an electrolyte, and an unsaturated carbon halide compound under gentle conditions so that two atoms of fluorine are attached to each double bond. Examples of unsaturated carbon halides are C2Cl4, C2FCl3, C2F2Cl2, C2F3Cl, C2F4, the corresponding C3 and C4 compounds, and compounds containing a number of double bonds such as C4Cl6 and C6Cl6. Examples of saturated compounds obtained are 1,2-difluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane; 1,1,2 - trifluoro - 1,2,2 - trichloroethane; and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-1,2-dichloroethane. The electrolyte may be an alkali metal fluoride.
