Abstract
585,663. Sealing metal to glass. AMBROSE, E. J., and McGILL, E. F. G. May 7, 1943, No. 7298. [Class 36] [Also in Group XXIII] For sealing metal to glass, for example conductors through the glass of electron discharge devices, there is used a cement composed of silver bromide or iodide or of chloride, bromide or iodide of copper, thallium or lead or a mixture of any two or more of the chlorides, bromides or iodides of copper, silver, thallium or lead. The cement is melted on to the surfaces to be united which may have been previously treated with a flux composed of alkali metal nitrite, ammonium phosphate or microcosmic salt. If the flux referred to is used the cement may comprise silver chloride only as well as the other single halides or mixtures specified. The flux and cement are heated by a small reducing flame sufficiently to cause decomposition of the flux and the cement after baking up to about 450‹C. is re-melted momentarily.
