738,849. Fireplaces. LATHE & CO., Ltd., C. Jan. 19, 1954 [Feb. 9, 1953], No. 3544/53. Class 126. A throat unit for a fireplace constructed of metal and having means for fitting the unit above a fireplace between the upper end of the fireplace and the lower end of the chimney is provided with a baffle adjustably mounted in the unit and capable of being retained in any one of a number of positions so as to vary the throat area. A metal throat unit comprises a flat back plate 11, a front plate 10 curved at the bottom and side plates 12 secured to lugs 15 on the back plate 11. A shelf 19 may be secured to the front plate to assist in building the surround, and horizontal plates are attached to flanges at the bottom of the side plates for building into the fireplace brickwork. The baffle plate 22 is carried. by pivot pins engaging open-topped trunnions formed in lugs 24 attached to the front plate. A lever 25, pivoted to a lug 26 on the baffle plate, is provided with a lug which engages notches 28 in a quadrant 29 formed on the front plate to hold the baffle in position. Stops 31 limit the closing movement of the baffle.
