Abstract

737,208. Projectiles. PORTABLE INDUSTRIES, Inc. April 2, 1953 [April 30, 1952], No. 9176/53. Class 9(1). Projectile-like studs or pins to be fired into steel, concrete, &c., from explosively operated tools are provided with means for aligning and retaining the studs in the barrel. Fig. 2 shows a stud S on the threaded end 11 of which is placed a retaining member 10 which is cup-shaped, a second retaining member 15 being placed on the tip of the stud. The member 15 has a conical body to fit the stud and an annular flange 17 engaging the barrel TB. The two retaining elements may be of soft, ductile metal, or preferably a polyethylene plastic material. In a modification, the member 15 has a tubular body which may be cylindrical or frusto-conical. In addition to acting as centring and retaining means, the member 10 acts as a gas-check and after penetration both members form a seal around the stud for the opening in the steel or concrete and help to reduce spalling. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifiaction 695,141.
