Abstract

750,617. Projectiles. PORTABLE , INDUSTRIES, Inc. May 27, 1953 [Feb. 9, 1953], No. 14750/53. Class 9(1) A propellent device for use in the bore of the barrel of an explosive operated stud driving tool comprises a cartridge case open at one end and having an explosive propellent charge therein and an elastically deformable, self-lubricating, plastic, cylindrical closure in the open end, said closure snugly engaging the open end of said case, consisting of polyethylene having an average molecular weight of about 18,000 but not less than about 10,000 and having an axial thickness sufficient to permit axial compression with concomitant radial expansion under the impact force of the products of combustion of the charge. The closure may be shaped as shown in (Fig. 3. If desired, the concave face 6 may constitute a flat face or be replaced by an ogival portion (see Figs. 1 and 4, not shown). In a further modification. Fig. 5., the closure is provided with flanges 8, 9. Certain of the above closures may be secured to the back face of a fastener by interlocking means or an adhesive. The closure may be coloured for identification purposes. Specification 471,590 [Group IV]_ is referred to.
