Abstract

736,453. Combustion chambers. SOLA, G. May 15, 1953 [June 20, 1952], No. 13735/53. Class 7(3). A fuel jet from an injection nozzle 1, Fig. 2, is directed through a path a at an angle to the side wall 2 of the combustion chamber and is then reflected through a path b at right angles to a to impinge on the top of the piston 3 at a distance e greater than two thirds of the length of the path a, the path b being greater than three quarters of the length of the path a, which is inclined at an angle α to the chamber axis between 65 degrees and 80 degrees, and the line c joining the nozzle to the point of the combustion chamber farthest from the nozzle being inclined to the chamber axis at an angle # between 30 degrees and 60 degrees and having a length greater than five fourths of the length a. The combustion chamber may be circular in cross-section and the side walls may be parallel with the axis or, as shown in Fig. 2, the chamber may widen towards its mouth. In further modifications, the side walls are curved or stepped outwards. The jet preferably impinges on the wall 2 at a point at least one eighth of the length a from the top. For multi-jet nozzles, the combustion chamber is provided with flat sides, Fig. 9, equal in number to and opposite the fuel jets 5 which are directed at an angle between 5 degrees and 20 degrees to the normals to the flat sides.
