Abstract

1,204,947. I. C, engine combustion chambers. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. June 14, 1968 [June 24, 1967], No.28439/68. Heading F1B. In an internal combustion engine in which fuel is injected into a combustion chamber in the direction of an air flow guided along the combustion chamber peripheral wall, the peripheral wall extends in at least a part of the total periphery, with a continuously decreasing radius in the direction of the air flow and in the region before the ignition source merges into the portion of the peripheral wall having the largest radius by means of a wall portion defining a sharp edge and lying in a radial plane. The combustion chamber 2, Fig.1, is formed in the piston 1 and has its peripheral wall 3 decreasing in radial distance for the piston axis 11 in the direction 10 of a circular movement of the air imparted by means provided in the inlet valve 6 or in the inlet passage. At its position of least radius, the peripheral wall 3 forms a sharp edge 4 with a wall portion 5 lying in a radial plane and serving to join this portion to the portion of greatest radius. The turbulence occuring in the region of the sharp edge 4 produces intimate mixing of fuel and air, and the reduction of pressure occuring downstream of the sharp edge brings the mixture into vapour form in front of or below a spark plug or glow plug 9, which is located 15 degrees to 25 degrees downstream of the sharp edge 4. As shown, the fuel jets 12 from the fuel injection nozzle 8 are entrained by the rotating air current before reaching the peripheral wall 3, but in another arrangement, Fig.2 (not shown), the fuel jets impinge against the peripheral wall upstream of the sharp edge (4). The fuel, under the combined effect of its kinetic energy and the action of the rotating air, is detached at the sharp edge (4) from the peripheral wall (3) in the tangetical direction and impinges again on the peripheral wall under the plug (9), which is located at a radial distance from the axis (11) which is greater than that of the sharp edge.
