Abstract
767,288. Combustion chambers. KRUG, H. Feb. 11, 1953 [Feb. 22, 1952], No. 3893/53. Addition to 749,825. Class 7 (3). In a modification of the compression ignition engine described in the parent Specification, wherein the fuel is sprayed as a thin film on to the wall of a combustion chamber formed as a body of revolution in the piston and vaporized from said wall by air rotating in the combustion chamber, the combustion chamber comprises an inner part 4', Fig. 3, formed as a body of revolution and an outwardly divergent or funnel-shaped passage part 7' upon which the fuel is sprayed from an inclined nozzle as a thin film, an inwardly projecting edge 10 formed at the junction between the parts 4', 7', ensuring that eddies 8' are formed when the combustion products leave the combustion chamber in addition to the eddies 6' formed when the combustion air enters the chamber, which eddies assist in the vaporizing of the fuel film. The passage part 7' may be concave or convex or funnelshaped and may be provided with grooves 15, Fig. 5, the edges 16 of which produce further eddies in the rotating air.
