865,536. Combustion chambers. EFFENBERGER, J. July 31, 1957 [Aug. 7, 1956], No. 24305/57. Class 7(3). In an engine in which the fuel is sprayed on to a smooth portion of the combustion chamber wall and vaporized by the swirling combustion air, a recess 5, Fig. 2, at a predetermined distance from the nozzle 3 detaches the fuel film flowing over the edge thereof from the combustion chamber wall and facilitates starting. In Fig. 2 the combustion chamber 2 is spherical and formed in the piston, the air being set into rotation on entering the cylinder. In Fig. 3 the edge of the opening 9 into a swirl-type chamber 7 is used to detach the fuel film from the chamber wall. The width of the edge of the recess 5 or opening 9 may be the same as or less than the width of the fuel film.
