Abstract

811,170. Fuel injection engines. KRUG, H. July 20, 1955 [July 24, 1954], No. 20980/55. Addition to 749,825. Class 7(3) In an engine operating according to the method of the parent Specification, in which the fuel is normally injected immediately on to the wall of a combustion chamber in the piston in the direction of air rotating in the chamber to form a thin film thereon which is vaporized by the rotating air, a substantial proportion of the fuel is mixed directly with the air in the chamber at starting. In Fig. 1 the fuel is normally directed as a jet 5 immediately on to the chamber wall but at starting the nozzle 4 is rotated to direct the jet along the path 8 or 9 for direct mixing with the air. In a modification, Fig. 5, the nozzle 4 is stationary and provided with a separate orifice 4a which is opened at starting. In Fig. 4 the direction of rotation of the air in the combustion chamber is reversed at starting so that it is in opposition to the normally directed jet whereby a large part of the jet is blown away from the chamber wall along the path 22 and does not form a film. The direction of rotation of the air is altered by variation of the position of the screen on the air inlet valve. Alternatively the air swirl may be suppressed at starting whereby a portion of the jet disperses into the air in the chamber instead of forming a film on - the wall.
