Abstract
880,418. Combustion chambers. BOTTGER J. May 22, 1958 [June 12, 1957], No. 16432/58 Class 7(3). In a direct injection engine with an open combustion chamber in which the air rotates about the cylinder axis, the fuel is injected in at least two jets of different free lengths, the shortest jet I, Fig. 1, being directed so as to impinge near the centre of the piston or cylinder head and the longer jet or jets II, III, being directed substantially in the direction of air rotation. The individual jets may be replaced by a single fan-shaped jet having the edge of shorter free length impinging on the centre of the piston or cylinder head and the remainder directed in the direction of air rotation. The jet II preferably impinges upon an outer part of the piston head and the jet III impinges on the side wall of the combustion space or on the cylinder head. In a modification the combustion chamber is lens-shaped and in Fig. 4 it has a conical projection on its base.
