Abstract

755,144. Direct injection engines. MOTOREN-WERKE MANNHEIM AKT.- GES. VORM. BENZ ABT. STAT. MOTORENBAU. May 17, 1954 [May 15, 1953], No. 14450/54. Class 7(3) An inclined fuel injector 10 injects on to' a combustion chamber 3 in the piston having the form of an ellipsoid of revolution with a cylindrical inlet aperture 2, the minor axis 5 of the chamber 3 being inclined to the piston axis, which it intersects in a plane containing the top of the piston 1, so that the centre point of the chamber 3 is displaced towards the injection nozzle 10, and the axis of the opening 2 being arranged substantially perpendicular to the axis of the fuel jet and preferably parallel to the minor axis of the combustion chamber so that the air stream flowing into the chamber 3 impinges upon the fuel jet substantially at right angles. The axes of the generating ellipse of the chamber 3 are in the ratio 3 :2 and the cross-section of the aperture 2 and the greatest cross-section of the chamber 3 are in the ratio 1 :3.5. The nozzle 10 is preferably arranged so that its jet axis passes approximately through the centre point 20 of the combustion chamber at top dead centre.
