Abstract
733,528. Expansion joints. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. July 2, 1953 [July 4, 1952], No. 18354/53. Class 99 (1). In firing means for a pulverized fuel fired furnace a direct firing mill and a burner arranged to discharge into the furnace chamber are connected by a pipe which includes means preferably that described in Specification 730,816 to permit movement between the burner and mill due to thermal expansion and contraction of the chamber walls, and similar movements are allowed for by a connection in a duct 4 arranged to pass hot gases from the chamber outlet 3 to the mill. As shown, a refractory duct 4 has a sheet metal casing 5 provided with an inwardly extending flange. 8 formed with grooves in which is disposed asbestos rope packing 9 engaging the surface of a flat metal frame 7 extending around the outlet 3, and an outwardly extending, peripheral flange 10 located in a pocket formed between a cover 12 and the frame. Rollers 17 carried on axles 16 secured to the casing 5 bear on vertical tracks attached to the frame 7 and allow for vertical relative displacement of the outlet 3 and the duct 4 and, to provide for relative lateral positioning of the outlet and the duct, guides 14 on the cover 12 slidably engage between blocks 15 on the casing; alternatively, the guides 14 and blocks 15 are replaced by guide flanges on the rollers 17 which flanges co-operate with complementary parts on the tracks.
