[Also in Group XXX] In a pulverized fuel fired furnace fired from a direct-firing mill, a pipe leading from the mill (not shown) to a burner 4 discharging into the furnace chamber includes a flexible connection to permit movements, due to thermal expansion and contraction of the walls of the furnace chamber, between the burner and the mill. As shown, the pipe comprises a vertical part 1, a bend 2 and a horizontal pipe 9. A sleeve 7 secured to a flange 5 on the bend spigots into one end of the pipe 9, the other end of which spigots into a sleeve 11. connected by a flange 12 to a flange 13 on a burner casing 14, the end of the sleeve 7 being thickened to form a curved projection 8 and a similar projection 10 being formed on the pipe 9. The pipe 9 is supported by hinge pins 15 on the sleeve 7 engaging slots 16 in the pipe 9 and pins 15<SP>1</SP> on the pipe engaging slots 16<SP>1</SP> in the sleeve 11, the points of intersection of the pins with the pipe axis forming the centres of curvature of the projections 8, 10. The joints are covered by bellows 19, 23 connected by a sleeve 21, one end of the bellows 23 being joined to the wall of a duct 25 leading to which is a tube 26 connected to a source of gaseous fluid under pressure, e.g. to the air duct in front of the mill. The gas flows via a space 28 to the joints so that entry of dust is prevented : the space 28 also acts as an insulating jacket. The bellows are enclosed by shields 29, 30.
