A valve of the type in which a pair of discs a are movable in a direction at right-angles to the axis of opposed annular seatings (not shown) by a screwed spindle &c. engaging a sleeve c and in which wedge-shaped lugs e on the discs coacting with a fixed wedge f cause the discs to be pressed against their seatings in the closed position of the valve, is characterized by a cross-head b carried by the sleeve c and having lost-motion between the lugs e and lugs d so that a self-aligning auxiliary valve k is withdrawn from a seating h on one or each of the valve discs a to open a passage g for equalizing the pressure on the upstream and downstream sides of the main valve before opening. As shown, the cross-head is rectangular in plan and an auxiliary valve k is situated at two diagonally opposite corners, the other corners having abutment studs p. Alternatively, the auxiliary valves may be on one side of the cross-head instead of being arranged diagonally, or four auxiliary valves may be fitted.
