730,020. Gear pumps; centrifugal pumps. DRYSDALE & CO., Ltd., and YOUNG, J. May 4, 1953 [May 2, 1952], No. 1I170/52. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (2). A two-stage pump comprises pairs of gears 2, 4 and 6, 7, the driving gears 2, 6 being keyed to a shaft 3, and the other gears 4, 7 being mounted on separate auxiliary shafts 5, 8, the axes of which lie on opposite sides of the axis of the shaft 3. A centrifugal pump 20 may suck fluid from a suction pipe 15 and supply a chamber leading to the inlet of the first pump 2, 4. The discharges from the pump stages are on opposite sides of the casing, this helping to balance the loads on the shaft bearings and relieving the load on a centre bearing 3<SP>1</SP>. Fig. 5 shows a valve 12 which regulates the pressure differences over the pump stages, so that the pressure rise over each stage is approximately the same. A port 14 connects with the pump suction 15, a port 16 with the final delivery and a port 18 to a chamber between the pump stages. The area of the top of the valve 12 is twice that of the effective area on the underside of the valve. With equal pressures developed by the pump stages, the valve closes the ports, but should the first-stage delivery rise unduly, the valve 12 moves to open the relief port 14. Should a high pressure be developed in the second stage, the port 18 is opened and allows excess pressure liquid to escape to the suction of the second stage.
