Abstract

602,408. Centrifugal pumps. DEHN, F. B. (Waterous Co.). Oct. 15, 1945, No. 26933. [Class 110 (i)] Two centrifugal pumps arranged in one casing are changed from series to parallel working by the operation of a rotary valve. The pump impellers 66, 67, Fig. 6, are arranged back-to-back on one shaft 26 driven through gears 50, 51. The shaft 26 is supported on three bearings 109, 110 and 101 and is packed by glands 93, 97. Inlet rings 87 run in wearing bushes 89. The pumps are fed from common inlets through intake passages 61, 64, Fig. 7, which shows only the passages for one pump, and they deliver to pipes 27 which communicate with common outlets. A conduit 119 connects the delivery of the further pump which is not shown to the intake passage 64 and the junction is controlled by a rotary valve 65 which in one position closes the conduit 119 and in the other shuts off the passage 64 from the pump inlet and opens the conduit 119 to that pump inlet. A non-return valve 122 is placed in the intake passage 61 and a similar valve 120 in the delivery of the further pump. When the conduit 119 is open, as shown, the pumps operate in series. The passage 61 becomes an interstage passage and the pressure in it keeps the valve 122 closed. The high pressure delivery goes to the pipes 27 and this pressure acting against the interstage pressure of the further pump keeps the valve 120 closed.
