Abstract

512,466. Gear pumps. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and FRISE, L. G. Feb. 4, 1938, No. 3569. [Class 110 (ii)] A multi-stage gear pump comprises one pump which supplies a common inlet leading to two or more pumps, which have separate delivery ports. A shaft 17 drives gears 22, 28, 31, keyed to it, and meshing gears 23, 29. 32, mounted on needle bearings 26. Diaphragms 27, 48 separate the pump stages. The delivery chamber of the primary pump is provided with a ball valve, which yields under excessive pressure allowing liquid to pass back to the suction side through a groove 40. The delivery of this pump is led to a hole 43 which communicates with the intake of the two secondary pumps, which have separate delivery ports. The combined capacity of the two secondary pumps may equal that of the primary pump, or may be slightly less. The ball valve may be dispensed with. The primary pump may comprise two pumps in parallel. Liquid may be supplied to the primary pump under pressure from a further gear pump. The delivery ports of the secondary pumps may supply legs of a retractable undercarriage, of an aircraft. The secondary pumps may be of unequal capacity. Specification 464,877 is referred to.
