Valves, arrangement of.-In a pump of the kind having at the end of the barrel 15 a valve structure comprising a delivery valve 1 seating on the barrel and a suction valve 2 seating on the delivery valve, means are provided for balancing the fluid pressure on the valves. In one form a piston &c. 4 is fixed to the sleeve 3 of the valve 1 so that the underside 26 of the piston and the shoulder 27 of the valve are exposed to the pressure in the delivery chamber 17, thus balancing the delivery pressure on the surface 24, 25 of the valves and allowing a light return spring 19 to be used. The sleeve 3 of the valve 1 has ports 5. registering with fixed ports 12 opening into the suction chamber 13, and the suction pressure on the surfaces 29, 30 balance the suction pressure on the underside 28 of the suction valve 2.
