Class 12(1) [Also in Group XXII] In an obliquely split connecting rod, the circumferential profiles of half bearing liners 1 are so formed that bearing surfaces fitting closely to the journal over oppositely disposed quadrants A. located on the line of thrust, are separated by clearance areas B adapted to provide wedge spaces for promoting maintenance of an effective oil film. The load bearing area is from 60 degrees to 90 degrees in angular extent. In one method of making the liner, it is held in a semi-circular cavity 2 in a block 3 and the profile having quadrants A and B formed by means of a suitably shaped broach. Alternatively, two borings may be made from centres C and D. In a further modification additional metal is added to the semi-cylindrical recess, preferably by electro-deposition, so that the liner becomes deformed in way of the quadrant B when inserted in the recess; a simple boring operation may then be performed.
