Abstract
650,545. Bearings. AVIATION WORKS, NATIONAL CORPORATION, and BREJCHA, R. Dec. 12, 1947, Nos. 32849 and 32850. Convention dates, June 13, 1939, and May 18, 1940. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In crank-shaft bearings a divided hardened steel pin sleeve 5, 6 for a ball or roller bearing, or divided bronze lateral thrust rings 3a, 3b for a plain side thrust bearing, or both, are secured in annular grooves 3 in the shoulders 2 of the crankshaft 1 by a ring or rings 4 of ductile material such as copper, brass, &c., which is expanded by a rolling process after insertion. The edges of the sleeves are chamfered or rounded off to receive the ductile material, and the rings are dovetailed in position. The ductile material may comprise a ring having a similar profile to that of the grooves, or be cast or sprayed into position. Lubricant is fed from the shaft bore through a radial bore (Fig. 1, not shown), an annular sleeve groove and the split between the sleeve halves to the bearing. Modifications describe the fitting of pin sleeves only or thrust rings only by two ductile rings, and the fitting of both sleeves and thrust rings by a single ductile ring intermediate the length of a circumferentially split sleeve or by two rings situated between the sleeve ends and the thrust ring edges.
