Abstract
871,001. Journal bearings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 11, 1957 [Dec. 19, 1956], No. 38663/56. Class 12 (1). A journal bearing comprises an outer shell 1 and a press-fit inner shell 2, with inner surface landings 3 which have a minimum clearance at their centres with a shaft 5 concentric with the outer shell, and alternately with smoothly blading shallow troughs 4 to form, between the shaft and the inner shell 2, alternating converging and diverging spaces. In either sense of shaft rotation there is always one set of arcuate wedges for building up a hydrodynamic oil film. In the method of manufacture the inner shell 2, is first placed in a four-part, split taper chuck 8 the inner surface of cheeks 9 of which have been ground to a diameter smaller than the outer diameter of the finished inner shell with the faces 10 butting. The chuck is tightened up to deform the shell into the shape shown in full lines, Fig. 2, the inside of the inner shell then being bored, with a smooth finish, to a predetermined diameter, as shown by the chain dotted line, Fig. 2. When the inner shell is released from the chuck it springs into the shape shown in Fig. 1. It is then pressed into the outer shell after which oil passages 7 and grooves 6 are drilled. The outer shell may be made of mild steel, and the inner shell of phosphor bronze, or steel tubing backed with white metal.
