Abstract
919,480. Bearings. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. Oct. 9, 1961 [Oct. 10, 1960], No. 34706/60. Class 12 (1). In a bearing having upper and lower sections 2, 3, the axial length of the effective bearing surface of the upper section is less than the bearing surface of the lower section, and the inner surface of each section has a spiral which extends angularly through 180 degrees and begins and ends at a step. In an embodiment, a journal 1 is mounted in the bearing sections 2, 3 which have joining faces 5 inclined at 45 degrees and are adjacent said steps. Lubricant is delivered into clearances 11, via axially-extending grooves 13 and passages 12, the point of entry being where the clearance is greatest so as to facilitate the development of hydrodynamic pressure. The reduction in bearing surface of the upper section is effected by circumferentially extending axially-spaced recesses 14, alternatively a single centrally-positioned recess would suffice.
