713,473. Combustion chambers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 10, 1952 [Jan. 18, 1951], No. 787/52. Class 7(2) The surface of a cylinder head 17 overlaps and conforms to the top of a piston 14 to form a thin clearance space 37 within the boundary of which is located inlet and exhaust valves 21, 22 having surfaces flush with that of the cylinder head, and the head contains a firing chamber 44 of a size such that the space 37 constitutes about 5 per cent of the whole combustion chamber. The shape of the chamber 44 is such that with the points 53 of a sparking plug 52 located midway between the end walls 47 of the chamber and on a plane X-X containing the cylinder axis, the minimum distance of any point of the end walls of the chamber from the plane X-X is no greater than the maximum distance between the points 53 and the wall 48 of the chamber nearest the cylinder axis. The chamber 44 may have a cylindrical side wall 46 and semi-ellipsoidal end walls 47, and the valves may be surrounded by intersecting annular clearance spaces 41, 42 communicating with the chamber 44 by the space 37 of a passageway in the surface 17 of the cylinder head. In modifications, (a) the chamber has plane and parallel side walls and a plane top wall, the end walls being semispherical, and (b) the top-wall of the chamber is almost spherical and a tangential side wall extends to the clearance spaces 41, 42.
